In the midst of darkness, we discover who we truly are. There is Another Way tells the story of a group of visionaries who refuse to surrender to violence and injustice, and in doing so show that another path is possible - for them, for us, and for all humanity.  As we are all faced with essential questions about who we are, will we choose collective liberation, where the needs, rights, and safety of all are prioritized - in which our humanity comes first, knowing that no one is free until everyone is free.

Combatants for Peace, nominated for two Nobel Peace Prizes, is an extraordinary bi-national group of former enemy combatants - Israelis and Palestinians - working together during an ongoing armed conflict. Faced with the devastation and escalating violence of October 7th and the war in Gaza, the very core of the movement must face great challenges and show that there is another way. The first question they have to face is their own belief…is this possible?

About the Film

Chen served for four years in the Israeli army and ten years as an operations officer in the reserves. He later co-founded Combatants for Peace after signing the “Courage to Refuse Letter,” a petition by soldiers and officers refusing to serve in the occupied territories. Chen is a theater director, facilitator, and lecturer at Tel Aviv University, using art and dialogue to promote peace.

Born in Kibbutz Kvutsat Shiller, Avner served in the elite unit Sayeret Matkal from 1994 to 1998. In 2003, he publicly refused to serve in the occupied territories and co-founded Combatants for Peace. A professor of Ottoman History, he received the Goldberg IEE Prize for Peace in the Middle East in 2010. Avner lives in Jerusalem with his family, balancing academia and activism.

Jamel, born in the Deheisha refugee camp near Bethlehem, lost his brother during the First Intifada. He was imprisoned 13 times for his activism and later joined The Parents Circle – Families Forum and Combatants for Peace. A construction worker and father, Jamel continues to live in Deheisha, advocating for peace and reconciliation.

Raised in Hizme, Suliman joined the Fatah movement at age 12 and was imprisoned for ten years after an attack on Israelis. He later co-founded and now directs Combatants for Peace. Suliman uses his journey from violence to nonviolence to inspire change and foster understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.

Ahmed grew up in Jericho, hearing stories of his family’s displacement during the 1948 war. Arrested at 15 for political activism, he later founded a youth group and volunteered with the Palestinian Red Crescent. After a severe injury during clashes in 1996, he focused on peacebuilding, joining Combatants for Peace in 2013, where he continues to work toward ending the conflict.

Michal Halev, mother of aspiring DJ Laor Abramov, lost her son in the October 7 attack near the Gaza Strip. Turning her grief into action, she joined The Parents Circle – Families Forum and Combatants for Peace. Michal advocates for nonviolence, using her voice to inspire understanding and reconciliation.

Peace activist Yonatan Zeigen recommitted to reconciliation work after losing his mother, Vivian Silver, in the October 7 attack. A social worker and trained mediator, Yonatan balances activism and family life in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. He holds degrees in law and clinical social work, using his skills to bridge divides and promote healing.

Tuly served as a combat medic and officer in the Golani Brigade, witnessing the human cost of conflict during the First Intifada. After leaving the army, he became a trauma specialist, earning a Master’s in Clinical Social Work. Deeply affected by the 2014 Gaza War, he joined Combatants for Peace, where he now serves as Israeli General Coordinator, bridging divides and healing trauma.

Iris Gur, a former school principal and educator, has led transformative changes in education and human rights advocacy. Since 2021, she has served as the Israeli Community Director at Combatants for Peace. With advanced degrees in educational leadership and mathematics, Iris combines expertise and compassion to empower individuals and communities.

Mai Shahin, a therapist and activist, has over 12 years of experience in conflict resolution, specializing in nonviolent communication and trauma therapy. A member of Combatants for Peace, Mai draws from her identity as a Palestinian woman to promote understanding and resilience through nonviolence and compassion.

He is the Founder and former Executive Director of the Jacob Burns Film Center, a nonprofit film and education center in Pleasantville, NY.
